So now we begin our counter point series, “Hi Tech”.  In this series we look to explore the use of new technologies and how they can improve the illustrative and communicative skill sets of our profession. This includes, 3D printing, VR technologies, Augmented reality, etc.

This weekend I came across a story that promoted Christopher Nolan’s new movie; “Interstallar”. Something along the scope and breadth of Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. And in a few locations across the country, there are scheduled Oculus Rift demos. One being this weekend at Universal City Walk. I had to check it out.

The demo took 3 minutes. It essentially was a “walk thru” of the space station, assumed, from the movie. The chair was a lounger style recliner built on a pedestal that raised and lowered. You can see in the picture, all pedestals are mounted on a platform.

What was exciting about the demo is that the goggles, fairly convincingly, trick your mind into feeling present in the space station. The resolution was low and needs work, but the head tracking (done with a motion camera mounted on a microphone type stand in front (white stem mounted stands in picture) translate my view and movement without hesitation. No glitches, kinks, or skips in the rendering.

You can also tell from the three people in the photo that they all act independently, in their own time, and view the experience uniquely. Pretty impressive for a demo.

This tech will be used for gaming, movies, and entertainment by and large, but also has footholds in healthcare, manufacturing, and obviously the design/development industry. With Oculus expected to hit the market in the next calendar year, we are very excited in experimenting with ways this can help visualize projects for clients, and more.

Lo Tech 001 http://www.osiarchitecture.com/lo-tech-001/ http://www.osiarchitecture.com/lo-tech-001/#comments Wed, 24 Sep 2014 04:39:04 +0000 http://www.osiarchitecture.com/?p=250 This will be the first post in a series dubbed “Lo Tech”.  Our industry continues to push the boundaries of technology, parametric design, visualization, and construction in amazing and incredible ways. It is in this post series we hope to continue to remember and recognize the value and benefits of a simple, quick hand sketch.

This is a sketch from May 3rd, 2013 while I was in New Orleans for a site visit. It was a gloomy, cloudy day and admittedly not the best ‘first impression’ the Big Easy could make. Regardless, a quick sketch of a rain soaked narrow street in the French Quarter.  What a unique and fascinating city.

Ink and marker, color: ‘french grey’ (how appropriate).

OSI sponsors Charity Golf Outing http://www.osiarchitecture.com/osi-sponsors-benefit-golf-outing/ http://www.osiarchitecture.com/osi-sponsors-benefit-golf-outing/#comments Fri, 08 Aug 2014 23:47:23 +0000 http://www.osiarchitecture.com/?p=240

On Friday, July 18th, OSI Architecture was proud to be a part of, and sponsor the inaugural Wayne Stuart Lyn Charity Golf Tournament! The event benefits the American Heart Association and assists in establishing a Prize of Excellence in Prosthodontics at Tuft’s University School of Dental Medecine.

It was a tremendously fun day with a great group of people. OSI’s own Mark Levine was selected by a random drawing from the group for the chance to win $5000.All he’d have to do, is sink a 60ft putt without practice. Needless to say, the putt did not drop, but he gave the crowd an exciting show as it lipped out off the right edge. ….close only counts in hand grenades and horse shoes . Maybe next time!

We are already looking forward to next year! Till then…….

Maiden voyage, again. http://www.osiarchitecture.com/test-news-post-for-osiarchitecture/ http://www.osiarchitecture.com/test-news-post-for-osiarchitecture/#comments Mon, 30 Jun 2014 21:35:58 +0000 http://osiarchitecture.netfirms.com/?p=200 2010 was a very interesting time to open a new architecture firm.

Through good fortune, great clients, dedicated staff, and constant hard work, OSI is happy to now re-launch our website! It is just a start, and over many more years, we intend to continue to update and build on the success we’ve enjoyed so far.

To everyone who has supported us, and worked with us; THANK YOU!

FORTHCOMING: In the near future we will be using this forum to post news about the office, completed projects, sketches, industry news and anything else that seems of interest. From browsing, you can already tell our penchant for a good quote. I’ll leave you with one I’ve always thought appropriate to success in our profession, or life in general.

“if you have an apple and I have an apple,
and we exchange apples, then you and i will still
have one apple.
But if you have an idea and I have an idea
and we exchange these ideas, then each of us
will have two ideas.”

George Bernard Shaw
